- It is right to light a bon-fire on St Johns night in the potato garden to keep away disease and blight from the potatoes. It should be lighted at the side the wind is from so as to let the smoke go over the garden.
A priest named Rev John Power was buired in Rosscarbery about 70 years ago. He used to cure a lot of people as if by miracle. He promised the people he would cure them even after he was dead. Since then alot of people visit his grave on St Johns night to get cured. There is alot of sticks and crutchs left on his tomb-stone by people who got cured.
The old people say that the fires lit on St John's night are to commemorate the lighting of the fires on the hill of Tara which St Patrick lit to defy the King of pagans who forbade fires to be lighted on the night until they lighted the first fire.
