   kitchen and some had only one room and a kitchen. Coal was used sometimes and stick and wood were always used. In the houses near the flax scutching mills in Seveagh the people burnt 'shows'. This is the local name for the part of the flax that comes off in the scutching. It is like broken straw or hay. The workmen in the mills and those living near it brought this home and stored it for the fire. This is a common practice yet around the mills. The old people used a little tin lamp at night for giving light. There was a little hole on top of the lamp through which the oil was poured. A wick was then put into the hole and a little piece left out over the hole. This was placed on the "hob" when lit. Rushlights were also used. The rushes were
