    was placed in the tallow and allowed to harden. The rush formed the wick of the candle.
    At the scutch houses a wooden lamp was used into which the rush light was placed. The lamp was suspended from the ceiling. The idea was to prevent an accident as the dust from the scutching was very flamable.

    This man has a “cam” a wooden candlestick for sitting on a table and a breadstool. The bread stool stood in front of the fire and the hard oat bread was cooked on it.
    He also showed me a mould in which brick were made. It was 9” by 4 1/2” and it had no bottom but it was well hooped with hoop iron. Brick making was very common in this district. A Kiln for the burning of
