- The churns were made of wooden raised on a wooden stand with a handle at each end Two had to turn the handles to make the butter & when it was made it had to be taken out by hand. then it was salted. Then it was made up into rolls & sent off to the towns to sell. The butter milk was a favourite drink & kept also for making cakes. Lumps of butter the size of a small marble were ofther floating on the butter-milk.
