- Long ago in this district marriages were quite different from what they are to-day. Runaway weddings were very common[.] On an appointed night the bride ran away from her father's house and stayed with a friend of the groom's. On the following day word was sent to her parents. If the friends of both partners gathered together and a great party was held. Each man brought a bottle of whiskey or a bottle of poteen with him. The grooms wealth was estimated by the number of stacks he had in his haggard.
In connection with present-day weddings there are many local beliefs. If the bride sheds a tear on the morning of her wedding it predicts an unhappy life for her. Newly-weds usually go for a drive after breakfast. On the return home to the bride's house a crowd locally called a mob gathers near the bride's house to welcome them. They all dance on the road for about half an hour. The bride gives sweets to the girls and the groom gives drink to the men. The groom(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
