    Bread
    Oats, rye, wheat were ground and made into bread in this country in olden times. The above were Kiln-dried in pots over the kitchen fire and then ground in a quern.
    Querns were made out of sandstone, they were made up of two parts. The outside one was like a small oven, the outside rim was about four inches high, the other part fitted into it and was turned around with an upright handle. Both faces were punched with a sharp punch and the grain was caught in the holes and ground. One side of the quern was lower than the other and had a small hole through the side where the ground flour dropped into a vessel and was then put through a sieve to separate the hulls. There was no soda then and that is why the bread was so black. Bread was also made from potatoes and was
