- The ancient way of making candles was by getting fat of cattle and melting it in tallow. This hardened into a big lump. A mould the shape of an ordinary candle was then procured. A cotton wick was out right up through the centre of the mould and fixed at both ends. It stood on one end. The tallow was melted and poured into the mould and left to cool. The end of the mould was taken off and the candle was pulled through perfectly shaped. Many of these were made throughout the whole of Kerry.
