  1. Most of the houses are modern. But many of the old thatched houses still remain. The thatchers in the district are, Dan Hone, Gleneely, John Mcmenamin, Crossroads, Joe Murray, Ballinacor, Mickey McGoldrick, Ruskey and Dan Lafferty, Cooladawson.
Wheaten straw is used. "Lint" or flax is also used. The thatch is fixed on with scallops (scolb).
The scallops are cut from the briars. This seems unusual as hazel and willow scallops are in general use through out Ireland. The thatcher uses a knife to pare the thatch and a mallet to drive scallops and also to tighten the straw.
The old type of small dwelling had two rooms only, a kitchen and a bedroom. There was a bed in the kitchen always. This was usually a settle-bed. The bed was placed one side of the fire.
