Poor children long ago ,and in fact to this very day in Ireland go bar foot until they are old enough to earn money to buy shoes and stockings.
In the West of Ireland it is quite common for women and men to go bare foot all their lives.
Boots are not made in Waterford but can be made if ordered from any footware shops.
There are two local shoe makers in this district. Their families have been shoe makers for the last three generations.
There are few shoemakers in Ireland now because the modern shoes are made by machinery and are less expensive, but these are not as good as the hand made ones.
There is a tannery in Portlaw which makes leather but did not do so in former times.
