- Old Houses
1. The houses in our district long ago had slate and thatched roofs. The slates were procured from slate mines in the district. They were put on with wooden nails.
2. The old people long ago had a bed in the kitchen. It was called a settle-bed.
3. The fireplaces were not always at the gable wall, sometimes it would be against the side wall.
4. The front of the chimneys was made of stone.
5. The old people did not hear of houses without chimneys. There were not any fireplaces in the centre of the floor in our district.
6. Long ago people used the hides of cows instead of glass for windows.
7. The old floors were made with clay.
8. Half doors are common in this district.
9. Wood is used mostly in the fires as there are many woods in the district.
10. Dips and rushlights were generally used for lighting purposes.
11. Candles were not made locally.
