There were not many chimneys made of mortar or stones in those days, as there no chimneys on some of the houses only a hole in the roof to let out the smoke.
The people used to take the bottom out of an old pot or can and place this on the hole in the top of the roof. This was to protect the thatch and keep it from burning.
