    Oaten bread was made on a "grid-iron" and boxty bread etc. was made either on a griddle or on a pan.
    When a "srohan" of oaten bread was made the "grid iron" was left standing against the fire and when well heated the bread was left standing against the support. In this manner the bread was baked. On Shrove Tuesday night pancakes were made. Oaten meal was steeped in freshly milked goat's milk and then well mixed with flour. That is the manner in which pancakes were made in olden times.
