  1. The people of long ago, only ate three meals every day, their breakfast, dinner and supper. The cock was always kept inside in the house, and when he crew in the morning, the people got up, and had half a day's work done," as they used to say, before they ate their breakfast. Potatoes, salt, and butter-milk were used at every meal. When the meal was over the table was placed near the wall, to make room, as the kitchens were very small.
Meat was a very rare thing to be used, except at Christmas, when everyone got full and plenty of it. Bowls were used for drinking, before cups became common.
