There is a field out the Convent Road, about a mile from Cahir, which is known as "Daniel O Connell's field". His statue - which is about seven feet high, was erected in this field in the year 1847.
Daniel O' Connell passed through Cahir in the year 1845 but he got a very hostile welcome here. He stayed in Mullaney's house in Cahir, where the present National Bank is situated, but he only remained for one night.
At this time, there lived in Cahir in a lane, known as Kelly's lane, a sculptor, who had a good position in Clonmel. There also lived in Cahir, at this time a middleman, named Cusack, who, as a joke, told the sculptor to carve a statue of Daniel O Connell and he would give him £5. The statue, which was finished in the year 1847, was erected in this field.
