  2. The Potato Crop.
    Soil - .While potatoes can be grown successfully on a wide range of soil, loose free working loams (are) are most suitable. For the production of seed potatoes boggy mountainy or other cool soils are desirable.
    Cultivation -. Thorough cultivation prior to, and subsequent to planting is essential. The after cultivation which has its objects, keeping the ground open and loose, and the destruction of weeds should be completed at an early date. Potato drills should never be rolled, they should be harrowed down with a light harrow or saddle harrow instead. The drills should not exceed 27 inches in width.
    Variety-. A selection should be made of productive varieties of the type in greatest (command) demand. An examination of the results of variety trials show that extraordinary differences in cropping capacities exist between different varieties. To meet the demands of local markets such as Kerr's
