  1. In the townland of Ballyroughan, under an old tree there was a hedge school. It was near Condel's house. There was a teacher called Mr. MacDonald teaching in it.
    He taught Irish, English, Arithmetic, and Writing in the school. They had no benches or tables only flat stones and there is one of the stones to be seen there still. They had no pens like we have today. They made pens from quills and pointed sticks.
    At the time they had night schools. The teacher used to go from house to house teaching. The people used to support him and give him a room to sleep in. He went to a different house each night.
    When he had a night spent in each house in a townland he went to another townland. Many people of the district went to the night school. The ink they had was water coloured with soot.
