On Saint Brigids night it is said that Saint Brigid goes around to all the houses and blesses things
It is a general custom to leave the door unlocked and make a good fire before going to bed. Some people get a turnip during the day and cut three round holes in it. In these are placed three candles which are lit at night when the people are going to bed. People also hang up a ribbon and it is supposed that the Saint blesses it also. In the morning the person that hangs it up puts it around their body and wears it for the whole year until the next Saint Brigids Day then it is burned and replaced by another. This is called St Brigids cord.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
