About 36 years ago I heard from an old man in Ballycanew that dyeing was carried on here. I made some inquiries about it but could not get any definite confirmation of his information. He told me the ordinary black sloes were the chief ingredients in the dye. I wrote down all I could gather from him at the time but the note book in which I wrote has been lost. However, from the information he gave me I experimented with sloes and here is the result.
When sloes are almost black but not quite, insert an ordinary writing pen deeply into the flesh of a sloe. Then withdraw and write initials on linen. Send to the laundry and when it returns the letters though dull are quite distinct. With every washing the get clearer and after a time are quite distinct. I have used it on many occasions instead of indelible ink.
My informant was a man named Sinnot at that time close on 80 years of age.
