About 36 years ago I heard from an old man in Ballycanew that dyeing was carried on here.

    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
As far as I can remember he said that his father or grandfather worked in that little factory, with four or five others.
The site of this industry he indicated to me as the spot where a ditch now separates the Pigeon Park from the Pond Field on the bank of the Mill Pond in this village. I have questioned a number of the old people today but can find no confirmation of Sinnott's story about the existence of this factory. One old man however who had been born here told me about fifteen years ago when on a visit here from London where he had lived since his early manhood that there might have been an ink factory somewhere about the position indicated but he was not clear about it. He was a man named Nolan (since dead). The configuration of the ground would seem to indicate that a structure of some kind once stood there.
