  1. Long ago there were many curious customs at marriages. People were often married in their own houses and then there was much feasting and dancing
    The people were always about a week "doing up" for the wedding. The bride went to the bridegroom's house to prepare. Then she went home + prepared her own house. The week before Shrove Tuesday was a common time to get married.
    The bride's mother was the first person up the wedding morn. The pair set off to the church to get married.
    Some friends went to the church also.
    When the marriage was over the people rushed home to the bride's home, often the men were on horse back and the first to reach the house either got the bride's garters or the box the wedding cake was in.
    After the great feast there was a dance.
    There were usually geese kept after Xmas for weddings. Some geese were kept in the bride's house and some in the bridegrooms.
    If the bride had no geese they had to be bought and fattened
