William Howlin was a great ball maker. The balls were made from corks - about a dozen for each ball cut into three parts - all the pieces were sewn together. Woollen thread was used round the bits of cork and horseskin used as a cover. The players played matches in shirts + trousers. The hurls used were long and thick. The "bow of elm" + "root of ash" were chosen as being the best material.
