    Sprigging and Crochet
A village now called Lakenstown about half a mile from this school and situated in a boreen off the road leading from Irishtown to Empor was famous about forty years ago for its sprigging and crochet. The women and girls used to gather into one house and bring their work, where they sang songs and played music. The men of the village were also very industrious and used to make baskets and presses and carved articles of household furniture. They were not tradesmen but did this work for themselves. Crochet work and basketing are still preserved in the homes of this village. It was called "the college" because there used be gatherings in the long winter nights.
