  1. In the year 1839 the greater portion of Finea was burned. At that day a row of mud-walled cabins extended from Finea to Kilgola on the right hand side of the road. The fires burned on an open hearth and arches or hurdles which were made of wicker work formed the arches.
The remains of some of these houses can still be seen in the fields. The wind must have come from the south west because the greater portion of Carrickbog which is situated to the north - east of that dis., was burned too. The people were in a terrible state and poverty stared the poor people. One or two rebuilt the huts, but the majority left for America.
