  1. There is a moat in Michael Mulholland's lands of Smarmore. This moat was built about two thousand years ago. The moat was built of clay and stones carried in bags on the workers backs to the place of building. The old people say it was used as a fortification and that chiefs lived in it guarded by men. The height on which it stands must be 700 feet above sea level and it commands a view of four or five counties.
