  1. The sign of the Cross was made (while the Three Divine Persons were invoked) with the burnt end of a hazel stick on the left shoulder of every man and boy in the house. If a member of the family were named Patrick it fell on him to perform the rite. Girls wore crosses made of cardboard and covered with various coloured ribbons.

  2. Many marriages take place on Shrove Tuesday. Pancakes are made on that night on account of the fast for Lent. A ring is hidden in one pancake, and who ever gets the ring is supposed to be
