  1. Local Songs - Father Murphy and His Shelmaliers

There are many ancient songs written about certain happenings in Ireland.

There are many ancient songs written about certain happenings in Ireland. Among them is "Father Murphy and his Shelmaliers". The author is unknown but it was written in memory of Father Murphy.
    It goes thus:-
You Roman Catholics throughout this nation
    Of no persuasion.
Keep fresh on date the year '98
When we lost the price of our country.
I mean that hero, brave Father Murphy
Who for your sakes fought for liberty
And violent pitch caps most lacerating
On your head, was placed on this country.
    We marched to Comber
    We fought the soldiers
We did indeed and the cavalry
We took up arms to defend God's garment.
