    Shrove is the usual time for boys and girls to get married.

    The matchmaker had a busy time trying to get a match made. When he had a suitable boy in his mind he had to find a suitable boy for him. Many a journey he gave to and fro until he had the fortune fixed. If the boy had a farm of 20 aces and a few cows, he had to get the girls' parents to find £200 or perhaps £150. If the boy was old and the girl young and a good house keeper, he might manage to get her into that place for £100 or less, or some other articles such as a couple of heifers and a pig or perhaps a couple of sheep.
    The "straw boys", dressed up in all kinds of hats, clothes and masks paid a visit to the house on the night of the "hauling home". They sand and danced and tried and to make all sorts of amusements. That night bonfires are lit, to welcome the bride and bride groom home. It is said that the people who are old and who do not get married when they were young must go to Sceilg. It is situated in the west of Kerry. Rhymes are made about those who do not get married and is called "Sceilg list".
