- Hedge schools did exist in this district at one time.
They were known locally as hedge schools.
There was one where Verlings are living now, 1/4 ml from school, another one in the Abbey and one in the townland of Ballymacsimon.
Mr O'Sullivan was the name of the teacher who taught in Verlings.
The teacher who taught in the Abbey was a stranger.
School was carried on in the farmers houses, and the teachers lodged with the farmers while school was in being.
The teachers were paid in money and kind – getting a subscription from some and eggs and fowl and butter from others.
Instruction was through Irish, it being the principal subject. English, Latin and Arithmetic were also taught.
Writing was done on slates by the pupils.
When school was held outside the house the children sat on stones.
The teachers did not as a rule remain long in each district.
