    being very old, and the last of the old people who were able to speak Irish died some years ago.
    The number of thatched and slated houses in the district are about equal. In recent times a few of them have been roofed with iorn. Houses cannot be less numerous than formerly as one rarely sees the ruins of an old house: while many new ones have been built. The average number of a family is less than half of what it used to be long ago.

    The village of Meelin is called after "Meelan". This lady was the daughter of the last reigning Chief of Clanawley or Canauly) and tradition states that on the night of her marriage "Meelan" was transported by supernatural agency from a hill near her father's home, Castle McAuliffe to a hill four miles to the north, now
