    There was a poor labourer and his wife was in labour.

    He arose and went home and found the neighbours wives all celebrating the arrival of the son. He ordered one of them to hang a big pot and fill it with water and they all wondered at his strange behaviour. When the water was boiling he lifted the clothes of the child and took it up in his arms. "Home now " says he, you ould devil, I put you in the pot and scald the life out of you." The woman kicked up a terrible row but they soon stopped when the child got his voice "oh!" he said, don't scald me, don't scald me, lit me out the door and your child will soon be returned to you" The man finally agreed and the ould craythur hobbled away out the door and back to the fort.
