- The roofs they had long ago were made of sods cut out of the field and thatch. They got the thatch on the hill. There were two beds in the kitchen the beds used be near the fire. The old people used sleep in them. The hearth was in the middle of the gable. There were no chimneys on the houses long ago but a hole in the roof.
