The Potato Crop

Potatoes are sown in drills. Wooden ploughs are still to be seen, but are not used. When the potatoes come up, the plough is run through the furrow & clay put to the stalks. In the Autumn, the plough is run through the drills & all the members of the household go out to pick the potatoes, which are stored in pits, a part of the ground hollowed out to a depth of about half a foot & into which the potatoes are put. The potatoes which grow best in this district are Leinster Wonders, British Queens & Shamrocks.

About ¾ of an acre is under potatoes on our farm. They are sown in drills.
At first, the ground is ploughed & well harrowed & then rolled, after which it is 'drilled' by means of a plough.
When the potatoes are over-ground, they must be well hoed & scuffled. Three weeks after they appear, they must be "earthed".
The potatoes are dug by means of a plough, which divids the drill in two & exposes the crop which is picked into baskets by those employed for the purpose.
