They used also burn lime in the kilns. There were lime kilns in Glenpipe, Mullinakill, Coolnahaw, Ballykenna, Garrandarragh and Smithstown.

(Alice Lawless, Told by her mother at Ballykenna, New Ross)
Mrs. Lannigan from Garrandarra used to make hats. The way she used to make them is to plait a roll of plaits and sew them together and sell them as hats.
John Lannigan from Garrandarra used to make baskets. He used get a bundle of sallies and put a lot of thick sallies in the bottom and make the baskets roundy and put two handles in them. He used to pull the sallies to make them go far. Then he used to say to himself, "John, be honest! I will if I can." He used sell them and charge one shilling and sixpence for them.
Neddy Mullaly, of Ballykenna who died ten years ago, aged about 70 years, used to make kishes to feed cows and strain potatoes.
