- I heard of a treasure being hidden around here. It is hidden in some part of Jerpoint Abbey. Jerpoint Abbey is situated on the side of the road about four miles from Stoneyford and one mile from Thomastown.
Long ago during the middle of the seventeenth century it was occupied by Monks and they were very holy men. They had a pot of gold in this Abbey with them. Cromwell was in Ireland at this time and he knocked a lot of Abbeys and Castles to get the valuable things that were inside them.
One day as he was passing with a lot of soldiers by the Abbey, at first he did not go in and destroy it, but passed on. He did not like to knock it as it looked so quiet and peaceful. When the Monks saw that he had passed on they became very glad, and rang the joy bells. When Cromwell heard this he got very angry and came back and knocked the Abbey, but did not find the gold. No more attempts have been made to find it.
