A Local Song
“The British boast of Nelson's Glory and Scotland too of Sir Wiliam's fame”
This was written by Ned Drea. He is called Ned of the Hill and lived in this parish near Hugginstown. He wrote this song to keep alive the great deeds done by the people at the battle of Carrickshock.
1.
The British boast of Nelson's Glory and Scotland too of Sir William's fame.
But Irish valour shall live in story while a bard survives to recount the same.
'Twas in December on a Wednesday morning strange rumours went the country round.
That it was resolved on chief Gibbon's orders to get the tithes or their cattle pound.
2.
The Chapel bells they were kept sounding; the people heaving in great numbers flocked.
Oe'r gripes and ditches with speed all bounding to meet the peelers at Carrickshock.
Twas then commenced an awful slaughter
For sixteen minutes there nothing but fun.
With their pikes and scythes they gave them no quarter,
But stood the brunt without fife or drums.
