  1. The ruins of a monastery built in the 16th century are still to be seen in Templenoe Burial-ground. The date 1701 is engraved on a corner-stone. Upwards of thirty monks taught in this monastery, also a number of lay teachers. The latest of these school-masters who went around to the houses at night and taught privately was Donal O'Sullivan, commonly called - Donal Máighistir Mór. He was one of the great O'Sullivan clan of Cappanacuss. He is supposed to have been buried in the Vault of the O'Mahonys' as they were related.
    Some of the present-day tombs in the grave-yard was used as hiding-places for the monks and students in times of raids. It is said that at one time (?) a few of the ordained
