  1. There was a hedge school in Castlemarket. Patrick White taught in it. When the weather was fine they taught by the side of the ditch. There was about twenty boys going to it. Each boy had to bring a penny a week. They had to write on slates

  2. There was an old hedge school about a mile from Abbeyleix. It is in the townland of Killamuc. A travelling school master taught there. The name of the schoolmaster was Lawlor. There were many of other masters there from time to time. Each school master would stay four months teaching then he would leave and go off to another school The language spoken was Irish. The writen was done on slates.
