Long ago the people used to have pastimes at wakes such as card-playing and story-telling. Long ago when the men would be playing cards the women would be spinning and carding wool. There are not many spinning wheels in Ireland now. There is only in my village.
In every village there is a visiting house. The old men tell stories and tell about the fairs and the price they got for their stock. On a Sunday night there are more people in a visiting house than on a week night. The people both young and old go to a visiting house. It is about twelve o'clock when a game of cards is over. No women go to a visiting house at all. A few girls from one village will gather into one of the houses in that village and they will play a game of Ludo.
