flax wheel which they used long ago. They are only to be found in a few places in Ireland now.
Another crop they used to sow was wheat. They used to grind it into flour themselves with two stones. When the people were sowing these crops long ago they had no ploughs or harrows as the farmers have now. They sowed them all with the spade and reaped them with the scythe.
There is a visiting house in our village also. The name of it is Hoban’s. All the men after their days work gather into that house and spend the night there talking about the news of the day. The people long ago used to tell stories in the visiting houses. Hoban’s is a visiting house as far back as my father ‘can’ remember.
