- I am one of the second Generation of Laffeys born at Cloonkeen Abbert. My father is a farmer. Mt grandfather was also a farmer and in his youth was changed from Palas estate to Abbert eatate. He married my grandmother whose maiden name was Brigid Mellody of Crumlin Ballyglunin.
My father was the eldest of the family and joined the Irish Volunteers in nineteen fourteen. He married my mother Margaret Mellody in nineteen twenty four.
A Story.
Once a superstitious man went to the fair to buy a cow. His choice was one which had a red ribbon on her tail fastened with a horse - shoe - nail.
When he came home one of the neighbours took off the ribbon and the tail also fell off.
