- During the Penal Days times were very bad. The enemy killed priests, and bishops and school teachers. The priests hid in caves and mountains and they said mass in them and if they were caught they would be killed. The government used to give five pounds for the head of a priest or a bishop and there are places still remembered where mass used be said, namely the Backery in Corridon's field, at Keelmacada, Lady Well. The hedge teacher went around teaching behind hedges and on the side of the road and the scholars followed him around to get learning; and he sometimes went into houses and he was(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
