- Years ago a man lived in the village of Ballyburke. His name was James Burke. He lived in a small tatched cottage on the side of the road. During the black-an-tans a band of soldiers came to his house & asked him to go with (him) them & joine their army. James said he would not go for any man. At that the soldiers got angry & three of them caught hold of him. They brought him outside the house and said they would bring him to a river that was near by & throw him in if he would not go with them. But all the same he(continues on next page)
