Ballycar was once a quaint old place

Mary Flanagan Ballycar heard this story from her father.

Ballycar was once a quaint old place. It is said that in years gone by when the Coalphys were living in Ballycar Castle that the cóiste bodhar was often heard in the night coming down the avenue. This cóiste bodhar used to be drawn by headless horses and it used to stop outside the hall door of the castle. After a short time the whips would be heard and it would go away again. There are some people yet who say they heard the cóiste bodhar.
