- A Hedge School
In Glendree about three miles from up Feakle there was a hedge school the walls of whitch were standing as recently as forty seven years ago. The teacher who taught there was Master Rodgers. He was of poor descent but possessed great learning. He was married to Mary Bridgemund Butler. She was one of the noble family of Bridgemund Butler residing at that time in West Clare. Her people disowned and cast her away for marrying him. She lived to be a very old age but died in great poverty.
This Master Rodgers taught the children of the peasant farmers in the locality. The poor scholars came to this school with often but one book. They used to write with pens made of quills. The seats they had to sit on were the earthen floors and in the fine weather they sat by the ditches. During the winter months each pupil carried a sod of turf every morning to this so called school to light a fire.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
