the material to the tailors when they are getting clothes made. Some people stock the material and sell it to the people.
Thirty or forty years ago flax was grown locally by a good many farmers. At that time they made their own linen from its fibre. The flax plants after flowering were pulled out of the ground, dried in sun and soaked in water for about 14 days. Then it is dried and scutched or cut to separate the fibre from the wood. This fibre is sent to the mills and made into linen from which sheets and shirts are made. There are about 7 spinning wheels in the district but people hardly used them at all now.
