Maloney was due to receive a start of forty yards from Tommy Connifff, but the unknown McCabe, refusing to accept this allowance lined up beside Conniff. To the vast amazement of the crowd "Maloney" (who had disdained to become limit-man) succeeded in defeating the popular idol Tommy Conniff. The secret was not revealed but rumours got abroad that something very mysterious had happened.
A month after McCabes second triumph over Conniff the half-mile championship to the Northern counties was promoted at Manchester, the Irish rivals meet once more. The amateur athletic English national champion, Warton, of Darlington also entered, but he had nothing to do with the fighting finishing of the two Irishmen. From the half way mark they engaged in a cutthroat battle, with Conniff fading slightly, and McCabe moving like a machine to wine by three yards.
