   went to the Bench to say something in her behalf. Sargent was there. The courthouse was full. Sargent seeing the Priest said, Conaty what brings you here, go down. The Priest did leave off. Sargent went home as usual. The next day he commenced to eat himself, ulcers came out all over his body and he was put down in a cellar underground, prepared for the purpose, allowing light and air to penetrate to him through the wire-grating. He eat hay, straw or anything given to him. His appetite could not be satisfied. He lived in that way for many years. Nothing could heal the ulcers on his body. The food was thrown to him just as you would throw food to a horse. People said it was a fitting punishment for his insult to Father Conaty.
   When Sargent died people were much afraid of going the dark Garryross road after dark.
   Sometimes he would appear as a big black dog and other times rolled along like a barrel in the gripe and at other times like an enormous black man. about ten feet high. In one appearance or another he was seen or felt every night
