    given for half an hour each day. The highest class was third class or as it was then called the "Sequel". Pens were used for writing slates and slate pencils were used for Arithmetic in the higher classes. Each child had to bring one penny a week for the maintainence of the teacher, who was not paid by the Government or any other public body. The local people who could afford it were each to give a load of turf to provide fires for the winter.
