ST. AEDAN . Born about 550. Received his education at Clonard. Founded about 30 churches in Ui Ceinnsealaigh i.e. (Barony of Shillelagh in Wicklow and part of Co. Carlow and Co. Wexford)
St. Aedan the first Bishop of Ferns, Bran Dubh gave him the royal seat of Leinster. Aedh = fire - the supernatural fire that heralded his birth. Mo-Aedan-óg Maodhóg = My young Aedan.
He died January 31st 632, and is buried in the precincts of Ferns Abbey. He was the first Bishop of Ferns.
His effigy in a recumbent position lies inside the present Cathedral door. The old legend is that those who kiss him will never have the toothache. Crowds still come to see this effigy and and take away parts of it - in fact his nose is quite worn away from the constant kissing.
Tras-scríofa ag duine dár meitheal tras-scríbhneoirí deonacha.
