- 225Old Houses.all the old houses in the district were thatched. The houses were thatched with straw.
Some of the old houses had a bed in the kitchen which served as a seat all day and a bed at night they were called settle beds.
They were placed at the wall near the fire.
The walls were mostly built of mud.
The chimneys were made of the same material as the walls. The old floors were made of clay. Half dors were very common and some are still to be seen on old houses.
Turf was used in the district years ago. It is mostly coal and wood are used now.
Dipped candles were mostly used in olden days. The people made them themselves out of tallow.Bernadette Mc Donald
